Libraries for Charter Schools
Discussion Post
After reviewing Maria R. Traska’s (2013) article, I revised my thesis regarding charter schools. After going through this article, I believe my thesis statement suggesting the challenges compounding charter schools are quite real. The charter schools do not have libraries due to lack of funds. As I stated in my thesis, if libraries were in abundance in these institutions, then it would promote the reading culture and boost performance. I will have to avoid the fallacy that libraries are expensive to construct and furnish. I believe that by explaining the importance of libraries to the society, the audience will agree with my argument.
I have established that most of the funding for charter schools comes from parents and well-wishers. In promoting libraries, my inspiration comes from Steve Johnson’s (2010) TED Talk implying “that ideas don’t have to come in a unique, "illuminating minute" rather from a network of interaction.” In that regard, libraries an instrumental part in nurturing these ideas and making them practical. The experience I had with my child will be the major source of ethos. After seeing how my 11-year-old girl struggles to read and write, even after attending school for three years, it is necessary that I do something to improve her status as well as other kids facing similar challenges. Perhaps, working as a library volunteer will bring change to this institution. Logos would emanate from other parents and colleagues who are having similar challenges. Furthermore, as the experts illustrate, the void in charter schools can be filled via adequate programs from all the stakeholders involved
