Middle and Adolescent Growth
When raising children, parents face quite a lot of difficulties, particularly when they enter the adolescence stage. This is the time in which children define themselves and feel that they should make their own choices, and they make those choices as "correct" choices. The parents should first realize that he is at a teenage level in the case of Mike. It should be noted that Mike is in a process of growth called frontalization (Woolfolk and Anita and Nancy 38). At this point of brain development, the perception of teenagers is different from the way adults thought. They should be informed that the method of approach they take in advising him has to be friendly, this is because at this stage. It should be understood that Mike is in a developmental stage called frontalization (Woolfolk and Anita and Nancy 38). At this stage of brain development, the adolescent’s thinking is different from the way adults think. They should be informed that the method of approach they take in advising him has to be friendly, this is because at this stage he can do anything if he feels pressured (Crockett 72). According to the developmental theory, at the adolescence stage, the brain of the person is still not fully mature, and they need guidance on critical decision making. The parents should provide preventive guidance to Mike, which will include counseling (Woolfolk and Anita and Nancy 56). They should tell him that weight gain is not prevented by smoking but only a change in the way of life. It will also be important to mention that smoking will only increase the chances of developing other severe complications in his body. In fact, they should give him an available example, telling him to look on the people around him who are not smoking yet they have healthy bodies. In case the parents do not find it easy to provide the proper guidance, they can consult a physician to take over the role (Crockett 78). The research shows that Physician opinions are more valued by adolescents in behavior change. The reason behind the trust is that adolescents believe that they (physicians) have more knowledge on health matters than anyone else.
