Mixed approaches for analysis
A better understanding of the social world, according to Hessen (2010), can be accomplished by qualitative studies. She points out, however, that integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches into an analysis means that sufficient test designs are used to preserve a study's validity and reliability. The present social analysis involves the use of blended research approaches rather than strictly qualitative or quantitative methods of research (Hessen, 2010). In comparison to quantitative analyses that aim to track the extent of changes and consequences over time, Bryman (2006) suggests that qualitative evidence measures life experiences. Mixed research, however, provides a deeper understanding of the changes in the study variables by examining both their quantitative and qualitative aspects (Bryman, 2006).
My research topic is “Impacts of aggression on a child’s physical performance”. I intend to answer the following questions: How does aggression influence physical performance? Are there changes in performance overtime for this population? To answer the research questions, I will utilize mixed research methods. Collecting data on how aggression influence will involve qualitative data like physical behavior of children under study. However, examining the changes in physical performance overtime will involve collection of quantitative data like age, score, among other variables. Based on Hessen’s argument that quantitative approach plays an auxiliary role while qualitative research provides a better understanding of the phenomenon, am convinced that utilizing mixed research method will help in conducting an informed analysis and interpretation of the study findings. Although I have chosen mixed research methods, the research will heavily on qualitative techniques. It’s because establishing the relationship between aggression and physical performance involves observation physical performance.
Since the study involve children, ethical considerations especially on participants’ consent will be adhered to. Parents will be informed and their consent acquired before including their children in the study. Moreover, language and behavior appropriate to studies involving children will be adhered to at all times. Information obtained from the study will be safely kept and use solely for research purposes.
