My Slim-Jim Arms
I read an inspiring story about Tyler Dikman, who aspired to run his own business by the age of five, the day after I turned eleven. The article described how a young Dickman earned money by mowing lawns, running lemonade stands, babysitting, and performing magic shows in order to start his company CoolTrinics (at the tender age of fifteen). “I want to be like Tyler Dikman,” I thought as I pinned the article to my wall. I promised myself that if I worked hard enough, I would have a successful business by the time I turned twenty. Out I went and asked my father, who had just arrived from work if he could help me with the ideas. He said, “I will help you, my dear child, let you put some strength on your slim-jim arms.” He went to the bookshelf and tore a page from one of the poetry book; page 67, “A Girl’s Garden by Robert Frost.”
The poem is a well-crafted piece of genius writing on a girl young girl who wanted to be successful at a young age. She asked her father for a piece of land where she would plough and farm and harvest. It was a small garden, but she needed to cultivate with her hands and to work hard to make a successful harvest. Despite being a girl and at a time where women were hardly seen working in farms, she tended her crops and made “hills of each potato, radishes, lettuce,.., and even fruits”.
My father gave me the financial assistant I ever needed. He opened a bank account and gave me tips on how to save. I, in turn, looked for gigs, from dog walking to babysitting, at my free time. Every time my heart fainted, I remembered the “Girls Garden,” and how I need to work on it to achieve my goal. I remembered a father that believes in me and supports me in every way. More so, I fell in love with Robert Frost and his poetry.

Robert Frost
I admire Robert Frost style of writing. Most of his poems are short and precise, expounding on a particular situation or event, and detailing it to vivid bits. His alliteration, rhyme and imagery and second to none. The Girl’s Garden, for example, is easy to recall and recite. The fourth stanza (my favorite) says,
“And he said, “That ought to make you
An ideal one-girl farm,
And give you a chance to put some strength
On your slim-jim arm.” (Schoonmaker, Frances, et al. 67.)
I came to study some of his other works, “The Tuft of Flowers,” “The Road Not Taken,” “Acquainted with the Night” and many others, and it is hard not to admit that Frost is beloved in the poetry world. Reading through his poems, maturity comes to us. There is an attachment to each piece that he writes; feels like he wrote them with a soul attached.
Conclusion
I still have the “Girl’s Garden” with me. Just as all Robert Frost poems, I have attached a story to it. My online marketing business is still in its infancy, but I understand how it feels to have someone believe in you and support your slim-jim arms until they grow strong. I am not as successful as Dikman, but, I have achieved my goal. Moreover, I feel proud that my hard work paid in the end. I wish I would have met Robert Frost, and hear him recite to me the fourth stanza of the poem, “Girl’s Garden” just once.
