When the author places the plot of a novel or a play in a dangerous environment, adrenaline surges, and my mind travels to the same location, assuming the role of protagonist. I'm guessing that everyone who reads such a book will have the same reaction, or not. Imagine being in a quarantine where you have no access to information, and all the decisions about your life lie in someone else hands only this time it is not the doctor but a person suffering the same fate as you has taken authority over you. Under the Dome is depicts a similar scenario where the author Stephen King uses a comparatively simple idea to build a fascinating story of what most societies are undergoing in the contemporary world.

The first encounter with Stephen King happened when still a teenager through his captivating books including Salem’s Lot, The Stand, and Insomnia. Under the Dome depicts a masterful plot in the progressive manner of revealing the casts especially because King paints a picture of each character past the arrival of the dome. The entire storyline takes place in a span of five days or a week but still less feels superfluous especially when King introduces the character of Jim Rennie and two murders which surprisingly has others implications and not just as shock element like others authors will do. The short length of chapters that display the action in instantaneous punches and not long descriptions explains the economy employed in the book. The tension between relationships between partners as for the case of the nurse Rusty and his sheriff wife magnifies the abnormal pressures beneath the dome.
King depict unusual manner through in the process of developing and changing the characters since he does not leave room for an easy prediction on where changes and story of the character will move next. This evokes damnation and redemptions especially because the situation inside the dome escalates to desperation and corruption. It is surprisingly and refreshing to see that despite the deterioration of the situation in the dome King avoids replicating the platitudes of social breakdown as done in most apocalypse fiction in the presence of inadequate resources. For the most part, the changes and failures primarily and purely based centered on the personality of the characters, the aura of a miniature and rather limited community, and the highly yet unpleasant individual's ambitions. However, some of the characters used appear overrated (larger than life) the presence in the plot do not feel unrealistic; though to some evoke a cursory feeling this might have been intentional of King to depict the heightened feeling running in a disastrous phenomenon. The termination of the book is just right one since again King display his literal prowess by just revealing just much and not more.
In closure, Under the Dome is a miniature representation of how events including ecological, political and social undertones may evolve in a contemporary community when faced with a lack of resources and bad leadership. The plot builds in a slow manner but finally, King brings all the tension and havoc one would expect from an apocalyptic environment. Flat-out writing is what keeps King close to his story and more so to his sources. This somehow creates some sort of magnetization into his imagination. As usual, King focuses on the inner world, fears, motives and other psychological elements making the reader develop empathy to both protagonists and villains in the story. The intricacies raise suspense making the reader to through to the final lines. To say the least Under the Dome is a novel worth reading for all avid readers who love thrilling social science fiction.
