Nursing Informatics
Health informatics is a comparatively fresh field where several definitions are still coming up. Informatics id bridging the gap between information collection and technological advancements. Even though health informatics is a new field, already it is divided into many distinct disciplines and professional organizations have come up to serve people in the fields. Some of the fields include nursing informatics, clinical informatics, and medical informatics. Among all the distinct disciplines, it is Nursing Informatics (NI) that appeals to me the most. NI is an example of specific informatics practice in the larger category of health informatics (Nelson & Staggers, 2016).
The goal of NI is to promote the health of individuals, families, communities, and populations by getting the most out of information management and communication. Activities involved in NI include design and application of informatics solutions and technology to help in all areas of nursing. Such areas include direct one on one care provision, coming up with the best administrative system, creating critical decision support system, providing educational experience and maintaining a lifelong learning, and nursing research. Even though it is a new field, many nurses are choosing to join this cutting-edge field.
NI appeals to me since it is one of the rapidly expanding career, even within the health informatics field and health care at large. The demand for nurses is increasing and that stretches the capability of nurses hence the need for NI. It has a lot of jobs and employment opportunities since it is a relatively new field. Through nursing informatics, I will be able to make good interpersonal collaborations and provide the best care to the patient since care is at the core of the nursing profession. There are many organizations that a person with in the NI field can join for various reasons including professional development and certification.
Professional organizations someone in this discipline is likely to join include ANIA, AMIA, and HIMSS. American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), and Healthcare Information and Management System Society (HIMSS) are some of the biggest and most active organizations. ANIA, founded in 1982, seeks to promote nursing informatics through education, research, and practice in each and every role and setting (American Nursing Informatics Association, 2016). Today, its membership is open to not only nurses but also other professionals interested in informatics nursing (American Nursing Informatics Association, 2016). AMIA and its members seek to find out and promote knowledge from healthcare’s data to stimulate the health and healthcare transformation. (AmericanMedical Informatics Association, 2017). It offers the opportunity to become a member of a working group to talk about issues and formulate white papers (Hoyt, 2009). HIMSS, founded in 1961, holds annual symposiums and issues professional certification (Health Information and Management Systems Society, 2017). It also provides books, educational publications, and web conferences on topics on medical informatics (Hoyt, 2009).
Like other disciplines, NI does not function in isolation, it relates to other disciplines such as clinical informatics and medical informatics among others. Also, it offers many opportunities that exist beyond just Nursing Informatics for not only continuing education but also professional development. It offers opportunities such as professional courses and examinations meant for certification by Nursing Informatics organizations such as AMIA, HIMSS, and ANIA. The organization’s certification examinations are often revised to reflect the evolving practice (Nelson & Staggers, 2016).
