Nurture vs. Nature
A never-ending debate is the debate about nature and nurture as variables that influence human behaviour. Different views are held by philosophers, scientists, and various cultural and ethnic groups about what influences an individual's behavior and character. Nature is a term used in this discussion to refer to hormonal or gene-attributed behaviors, whereas nurture refers to behaviors dependent on the environment and experience. Nature and nurture both have an important impact on the character of an individual. The only thing that varies is their power level. Therefore, whichever side wins depends greatly on the understanding and interpretation of genes and the world by people. Scientists, for instance, have a great understanding of genetic composition and their influence on individual’s character. It is laid down that the child’s character will not differ significantly from that of his or her parents. According to scientists, therefore, nature wins. A common person with little knowledge about existence and the influence of genes will rule out its influence and attribute a person’s behaviour to his or her immediate environment. It is said that, if you associate yourself with toppers in your school, you will eventually become a topper.
I believe both nature and nature defines a person. Nature and nurture can determine a person’s personality acting either solely or as a combination. Genes hold the potential of a particular character while nature dictates whether the personality will reveal itself or not. According to science, some gene in our bodies cannot be activated in the absence of particular environmental resources (Manuck&McCaffery, 2014). Addiction from drugs, for example, may not entirely be as a result of heredity. Influence from parents, friends or partners also plays a significant role in making one a drug addict. It does not mean that because your parents were drug addicts, there are 100 % chances that you will also become an addict. Similarly, failure to have a history of addiction in your lineage does not mean that you cannot become an addict.
I attribute my loving and charming behaviour largely to heredity and partly to the environment. My mother is kind, loving, and caring to all people, and so do I. I do believe that I inherited these personalities from her. Mybehaviours, however, largely depends on the situation and conditions. When someone wrongs me, though rare, I burn up to an extent it becomes hard for I to control my emotions. Some friends tell me that I turn blue and pale in such situations, a condition I have never seen in my parents.
My parents were intelligent both in school and in real life situations. Some students used to call me “genius” few months after joining high school. I was able to handle and resolve anything that was school based virtually. Currently, we now have a team of “geniuses,” composed of those friends who associated themselves with I and went through the transformation process. This is evidence that nurture can transform you.
My choice of profession is wholly attached to the nurture; my father is a lawyer while my mother is a businesswoman. There is no connection between their professionalism and that of mine. I simply considered my interest as well as the trend in the job market.
Conclusion
It is evident from the above-discussed points that the debate is based on opinions and perceptions. It is hard if not impossible to say that we have finally arrived at an official conclusion that either nature or nurture defines a person.
