On leadership
Because of a variety of variables, my leadership style is social leadership. For example, this leadership fosters a culture of involving junior people in the majority of an organization's endeavors. While making judgments, I must confer with my juniors to gather their perspectives, which not only allows me to make substantial and viable decisions, but also motivates the junior members to enhance their performances (Gardner, 1984). Employee involvement in decision making makes them feel like valuable assets to the organization, which pushes them to work harder.
Furthermore, social leaders are more likely to work collaboratively to solve problems. The decision of exercising this leadership style was stimulated by Abraham Lincoln, in terms of his contribution of ending slavery in both the Northern and Southern America (Grill, 2016). Precisely, Lincoln is hailed as the father of democracy, due to his dedication in ensuring equality of all Americans regardless of their complexion, age, religion, gender or educational status. He commenced the process of abolishing slavery in the Northern American (where he came from) and then proceeded to the southern states soon after becoming president. In most of the decisions that he made, he always consulted his advisors and supporters before implementing them. The slavery of the minority groups could not have ended if the Northern states failed to support him.
Additionally, leaders who exercise social leadership style are hailed to be intelligence, and this is among the core reason why I embraced this leadership style. The intelligence aspect of this leadership style was manifested by Indra Nooyi, the chairman and chief executive officer of PepsiCo. She takes interest in her employees’ personal lives (Grill, 2016). For example, she goes to the extent of sending letters to the parents of the executives informing them that she is proud of the contributions of their children towards the achievements of the set goals and objectives of the company. Doing this alone makes the executives feel recognized, be loyal to the organization and cannot ditch the organization for another. Nooyi contemplates that the contemporary world is characterized by immense competition for limited resources such as talented workforce, and she has to do everything possible in order to keep talented employees within her company. I feel encouraged and inspired when I encounter leaders who exercise democratic leadership style.
Consecutively, organizational conflicts are deemed to occur in most organizations, but when the social leadership is being exercised, the chances of conflict to occur are close to none. Precisely, social leadership promotes emotional therapy of the employees, in terms of meeting most of the needs that are stipulated in the Maslow`s hierarchy of needs (Marvin, 2008). These needs are not limited to self actualization, self esteem, love, safety, and psychological needs. The self-esteem of employees is achieved by guiding or orienting them on how to complete the delegated tasks, as well as giving them confidence that they can manage. Moreover, treating employees with respect, providing a safe working environment as well as rewarding them for the work done help in meeting the hierarchy of needs, and this cannot be achieved without the social leadership in place.
In addition, with a social leadership style in place, team-work is achieved. Employees and leaders collaborate in executing various tasks, and this is a fundamental aspect as far as the achievement of the set goals and objectives is concerned (Gardner, 1984). Clear communication serves as the driving force for social leaders.
