Opinion on health care policy
Public opinion has been an integral part of democracy since the 17th century. For any government to be democratic, it would be vital to have active and educated citizens that hold informed opinions that could be shared and expressed(Bianco 14).In today’s world, public opinion is not just a requirement of democracy but is a force that influences government decisions, election outcomes and policy decisions. Understanding American’s views on the same issue, in this case, health care system is important, and that is what this essay seeks to do.
Through public opinion researcher, people can know the views of Americans on a variety of topics including health care. A review of data from over 100 surveys survey conducted over the past 50years reports dissatisfaction on various issues regarding health policies including the health care system, private health insurance, managed care companies among others.
An article written by Drew Altman illustrates how Trump’s Healthcare plan influence his win in last year’s general election. Trump focused on the fact that the people were unhappy with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) despite its benefits over the past four years and offered a better health care plan(Drew 4). He knows when a policy delivers benefits to people, the support for the policy grows, and so does his votes.
Since his election into office Trump through his Republicans in Congress has tried to replace the ACA and coming up with a health plan that is better suited for the American middle-class citizens. From a recent poll, these voters are disappointed by the Obamacare but are more disappointed with the alternative proposed by the Republicans. Trump’s voter all want a Republican replacement plan that keeps their out-of-pocket costs low controls drug prices, eliminates surprise medical bills and improves access to cheaper drugs and Trump will do his best to ensure this is achieved(Drew 4). The opinion of the American people is playing a significant part in the ongoing health reform process.
