Patient overview
Uncle Ken is currently taking only vitamins and baby aspirin 81mg daily as prescribed medication for his disorder. Notably, he does not like to take any medications unless he really has to take it. Since he takes care of himself by exercise regularly and eating a good diet, he does not have blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetics, or any other illness to take any medication currently. He often gets a prescription from his doctor whenever h is supposed to take medication. He feels comfortable acquiring drugs from the pharmacy under authorized doctor. He usually goes to the pharmacy and if he has a question he asks the pharmacy. He mentioned that the pharmacist usually does not teach him anything unless he asks a specific question. When I checked at his medication, I was surprised that all of them were vitamins like he said earlier. When I realized that his aspirin will soon expire, I advised him to avoid its later use. Interestingly, I did not notice any risks or extreme side effects of medications despite that the aspirin was soon expiring.
Uncle Ken does know any comparison or contrast between the living will and the Last will. Consequently, he cannot differentiate between a living will and last will and testament. He also does not know any differences between Medical Power of Attorney and a Living Will. Though he cannot differentiate the two, he has a living will and his wife has copies of it. He commits that, “I trust my wife more than anyone else and she is the faithful ever”. He said he updated a couple of years ago and he is not sure about the exact date. I would like to fill a living will since I was motivated by Uncle Ken.
Uncle Ken admitted that he has ever gone to several funerals when he was young especially when he was staying with his mother alone. However, he could not remember the funeral occasions exactly as they happened. He could only remember traveling with his mother in their dad’s car to their grandfather’s funeral. From there he could not narrate anymore since he was young and could not memorize each occasion. Interestingly, he enjoyed the choir team at the church ceremonial services. His family is very church orientated so they often attend to their church members and relative’s funerals.
Uncle Ken joyfully remarks the day his first born daughter was born. This period stands to be the most vivid memory in his lifetime. He had longed for a baby girl child and to his surprise, his first born was a daughter. He remembers this date clearly and he cannot forget each occasion which occurred that day. He has lived to remember it up to date. The biggest misconception I identified was the stereotype about older people being viewed as senile and weak. This is a mythical belief and there is no conceptual reasoning behind this. Some age related to declines in mental functioning can be either reversed of declined.
The consultant’s responses have given me vital insight into his life, his daily routine, and health practices. Knowing this information would be crucial to my ability to provide health care recommendations that suit him and other older people. It gave my ideas how aging people think and act, what was their mindset and what they did in their youth.
