Personal Statement, Being an Identical Twin's Struggle
My identical twin brother and I had a difficult time growing up as twins. The main reason for this is that we received numerous questions to which we had no answers due to their complexity. Although we were born in Belgium, we grew up in the United States. Our parents were looking for greener pastures, so we moved to the United States of America when we were four years old. We are bilingual and graduated from one class to the next as the youngest students in the class. We began school at a tender age, hence the result of being the youngest students in school. I am a brilliant student at the school. My high scores in mathematics and sciences throughout my college life evidence this. I started playing chase at the age of four and took part in the Robotics club back at middle school where I managed third place in the state. I also participated in the math club in middle school. I featured in a contest where I managed a first place in the entire country. Academics come easy for me as I grasp concepts fast. I am a well-rounded passion who thrives in a broad range of activities away from activities.
My passion for mathematics and sciences led me into enrolling for Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Calculus in high school. My other AP classes included Government, English, and World History. In all these categories, I registered the recommended points. At the high school, I enrolled as a member of National Honors Society club and the National Speech and Debate Association. I valued eloquence and clarity in my speech and hence the motivation for entering such societies. From my time as a freshman up to my final year as a senior, I participated in the varsity basketball and the varsity tennis. We scooped the state champions while I was a junior at the varsity.
Playing the piano is one of my extracurricular engagements. I started playing the piano since the age of seven up until now. I also venture in playing the recreational guitar. During my free time, I volunteer in various community works in our area of residence. Among the volunteering programs that I have taken part in include, being a tennis instructor at Juniper Hill County Club, Co-coordinator of a local food drive, tutoring students in math and sciences and being an intern at the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). I care about the environment, and this was the reason behind me signing up for an internship at Natural Resources Conservation Services. My hobbies include playing tennis, carrying outdoor activities such as hiking, rafting, biking, and traveling.
The Struggles throughout High School for Being a Twin.
Growing as a twin posed some struggles to my brother and me. We encountered many questions from schoolmates and friends. Some of these issues were impossible to answer to, however; we grew to get used to such questions. As identical twins, it was hard for us to develop our own identities. Our teachers could not differentiate us, and at times we were forced to take the places of each other. Our parents and educators were aware of this fact, and therefore, they took all the measures they could to ensure that we were independent of each other. Among these actions, including the separation of classes and compelled to make different friends. At first, it was difficult for the both of us since we did not fancy being a part of each other. We later, on growing up, understood these actions and focused on building distinct personas.
Frequent comparison to my twin while growing up was not pleasant at all. Even though we shared some qualities, I did not see it sensible comparing myself to my brother. We shared many hobbies and interests; picked the same engineering course and we shared some championship awards. With all these in place, developing a different and independent persona from my brother proved a difficult hurdle. Thinking about developing a different persona gave me sleepless nights. The process proved hectic, and at times, it seemed unattainable.
In conclusion, a keen look at all these challenges, however, shows that they led to building the both of us stronger and distinct. It taught the value of teamwork as we at all times worked towards the same goals. It helped as in embracing the different personalities of people and having a better understanding of how to relate to people. Growing up as twins offered us a chance of channeling our efforts towards achieving some things greater than our beings.
