Plant breeding
Downsides to Plant Breeding
Plant breeding is the science of changing the traits of a plant to produce the desired characteristics. It has many advantages such as alteration of the plant's purity and vulnerability to intense environmental conditions. In turn, no new genotype is formed, and this brings into question the problems of the promotion of genetic erosion and incompatibility with the organic agriculture. It is safe to say that plant breeding affects the purity of the plant. For example, mutations, admixture and natural crossing alter the purity of a cultivar. This now makes the plant very culnerable to the adverse conditions of bad weather due to a uniform response from a narrow genetic base of cultivar (Atom 3). What is more, plant breeding does not create a new genotype. Instead, the improvement is restricted to the isolation of a mixed population’s best or most desirable genotype. Plant breeding also promotes genetic erosion through some of its methods such as the pure-line where the most superior pure lines are multiplied to the exclusion of other genetic invariants (Atom 4).
Lastly, plant breeding is incompatible with the organic agriculture. One major effect of plant breeding is the introduction of the GMO foods and crops comprised of novel genetic constructs unlike the natural or organic foods and crops (Mogel 5). These have resulted in the dramatic upsurge in diabetes, obesity, food allergies and other food-related diseases (Mogel). All these motives contradict the organic agriculture.
