Playboy of the Western World
The video begins with a small woman (probably Pegeen) who has some conversations with the barmaid and young man (Christy Mahon). In hundreds of praises for his bravery, voice, faultlessness and physics, Pegeen seems to express her appreciation at Christ. While Christy is shy, she is proud to swell. In serving Christ's milk and bread, the barmaid displays her interests and affection. In her 30's a woman (Widow Quin) appears some time later. Christy looks impressed to seduce him, but Pegeen counters insults and sends her away. The reaction of Widow Quin is to announce Pegeen's pending Shawn wedding. Consequently, Christy feels devastated since he had feelings for Pegeen but Pegeen assures him that she would not marry a coward as she retires to bed. The video ends by Christy musing himself that had he known that he would get such respect he would have killed his father earlier (Synge n.p.).
I do not find fun in both the play and the video since they portray unfaithful behaviors to the viewers. I find it awkward for Christy to celebrate of killing his father for the little respect he gets from the women. Also, it is not acceptable for an engaged woman and old woman to take advantage of the Christy homeless condition to lodge anyhow.
The scene is at the end of Act I after Shawn and Father Flaherty left the bar. The video and the play directly correspond regarding setting, wordings and even the characters. I can understand the reason why the audience has loved the play since 1907. In literature, authors try to enlighten specific issues such as forced marriages at the expense of the people whom their children would love to marry. Such situations lead to squabbles in the family and close friends as well. Therefore, the play has gained its popularity from the touch of social issues.
