Policy measures that can be implemented to hasten adaptation of immigrant children
What are the policy steps that can be introduced to hasten adaptation of immigrant children? To begin with, legalizing migrants to prevent them from shifting to unorthodox means of survival is one successful strategy. Children unwillingly brought to the United States face tremendous obstacles, such as inaccessibility to education and other essentials, such as driver's licenses. To address this issue, Congress should pass a law that eliminates laws that prohibit immigrants from accessing traditional channels of mobility. Moreover, state ECE systems, irrespective of citizenship status, should make preschool participation compulsory and mandatory for all children. Therefore, preschool programs should be available based on residence rather than certain targeted communities. In addition, publicly subsidized programs should be structured in a way that minimizes language barriers, information gaps and other cultural sensitivities. Among the proposals documented by Portes and Rivas there is the creation of Federal Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors act (DREAM) (Portes and Rivas 238). This enactment would ensure that undocumented youth meets a certain criteria in order to be eligible for post-secondary education. The priority of this act is to boost enrollment of immigrant youth into community colleges. The government could support these initiatives through financial aid as well establishment of necessary infrastructure required for such programs.
Another effective approach is to encourage establishment of more volunteer programs and other similar ways of assistance in a bid to enhance equity, and at the same time help the disadvantaged immigrants (Portes and Rivas 239). Volunteer organizations are able to nurture, provide shelter, security, and foster care services to children without parents or guardians. Such organizations attract financial and human capital such as mentors, who are crucial in helping children to overcome challenges exclusive to their immigrant status. These organizations promote the child’s physical health as well as their emotional well-being. To conclude, it is evident that implementation of the aforementioned policy measures can go a long way in ensuring that immigrant children fit in the American social system.
