Policy of Social Media
I take this opportunity to call to your attention the ongoing upsurge of social media use within the Rio Tinto Corporation and the pursuit of strategies that will be influential in addressing emerging challenges within the organisation. Issues such as decreased morale of workers, leakage of classified company-related information and publication of disheartening material such as racial, ethnic and religious products. It is because of the increasing negative issues attached to the social media usage within the company that I have decided to come up with a policy proposal that I believe will be essential to the company. The proposed social media policy highlights on the reduced usage at the workplace and those using it as a platform for communication have to ensure that they hardly disclose confidential information regarding the financial, legal and operational framework of the company. As a part of the policy, the social media users at the workplace will also be required to ensure that they are not involved in the posting of dishonourable content such as ethnic and racial discrimination, religious criticism and discrimination on those persons with disability within the company.
Upon the implementation of the proposed social media policy within the Rio Tinto Corporations, various changes will be expected. First and foremost, there will be a limited usage of social media within the organization, and this will aim at ensuring that employees focus on the organizational objectives and goals. In so doing, this will help in increasing performance of the employees, and this will in return increase the firm’s productivity (Franklin, 2010). The policy will also be vital in the eradication of the reported cases of some of the employees using the social media as a platform for their posting of dishonourable and sensitive information that may end up affecting a section of individuals both within and outside the firm. As a result of the eradication of the posting of intolerable content on the social media platform by a section of the firm’s employees, this will help in enhancing the firm’s brand. Finally, in the recent past, the company’s competitors have managed to access its confidential information and this has been attributed by the activities by some of the employees that share the information on their social media. With the implementation of the proposed social media policies, it will be hard for the firm’s rivals to have an access of the financial, legal and operational information.
I am happy to announce that the first phase of the implementation process for social media policy will be departmental. This means that all the departmental heads will be required to ensure that they inform all the employees within the department on the policies and at the same ask them to adhere to the policies. The next phase will target the organization as a whole and this means that each and every employee will have to stick to the set policies, failure to which he or she will have to pay the harsh penalties that will come along with their ignorance. It will be the role for the Chief Information Officer for the firm to ensure that the social media policy is a success.
