My most recent discussion was with a friend, in which I tried to persuade him of the value of saving over purchasing a car. The discussion's goal was to make him see that investing is more lucrative than buying a car. Keeping in mind that he had enough money to buy a car as well as invest in the company, I had to plan how to approach him about buying my idea of investing his money in the business. I used beneficial argumentation as a message tactic. Through this strategy, I was sure that I would present an argument that would be supported by advantage analysis of the idea I was giving him.
Communication channels
At first, I used the mobile phone communication channel until I realized that it was not going to succeed. Therefore, I opted to use the face-to-face communication channel in communicating my idea to my friend. The face-to-face channels significantly shaped the outcome of the conversation. The reason for this is that I was able to give immediate feedback to the questions and doubts expressed by my friend. In addition to this, I was in a position to present a convincing argument since I had him. Therefore, my ideas would not be interfered with. More into this, the channel shaped the outcome in the sense that it provided an immediate reference because I was able to give to my friend live examples of how a business would enable him to gain profits rather than enjoying the comfort of a car that would be costing him fuel and servicing expenses.
Interferences and counterarguments
I encountered various internal and external problems during the conversation. The internal interference included my friend's attitude and need for the pride that constituted much of his responses. The external interferences included advice that he had received from friends and how they motivated him to buy a car. However, I managed to counter this by analyzing to him the benefits associated with a business and the expenses related to a car and its maintenance. I also told him to view life from an individual perspective and not from a group's context, and he will realize the difference in interests that we possess. If I had to go over the conversation again, I would make changes in the way I deliver my argument to my friend. I would decide on a time that is convenient and joyous for the conversation and present my arguments as an advice and not pride based approach. Through this, I stand to change his attitude and give him room to analyze what I tell him.
