Qualitative Study Research Topic
Introduction
The analysis involves the creation of a research subject. It provides the researcher with a guideline and provides an area of scope for study (Ritchie et al., 2013). The purpose of this document is to establish this qualitative study research subject. The goal argument, rationale, reflection, choice and positioning and question of study are some of the elements that will be discussed (s).
Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the meaning of domestic extremism in the USA with particular regard to its association with global terrorism.
Justification
The purpose of the study is suitable for the qualitative approach. The selected phenomenon is domestic extremism in the USA in association with global terrorism. The concept of domestic extremism requires an exploratory approach to studying. It is a conception that is hardly understood, which makes it increasingly difficult to contain. Furthermore, its connection with global terrorism is hardly explored and often neglected. Therefore, the use of qualitative approach is important as it will enable an exploration of the phenomenon.
There are several perceptions about domestic extremism. The constructivist epistemology lies in the fact that domestic extremism is driven by malice; hence, it is unfounded. Moreover, it is believed to be extremely dangerous and baseless. An ontological perspective indicates that the issue of domestic extremism is increasingly progressive. It has spread all across the United States of America in the past few years and has become deeply embedded in the culture of the country. The use of a qualitative approach will enable a comprehensive understanding of these perspectives.
Domestic extremism is largely relevant issue to the USA because of all the cases that have been reported in the recent past (Kundnani, 2014). There are groups of extremists emerging in the country on a regular basis. Currently, domestic extremism is considered to be a major threat to the country and the efforts to curb it are relentless, although predominantly futile.
Reflexivity, Bias, and Positionality
My relationship to the problem resides in the fact that I am a resident in the USA. The problem of domestic extremism in the country affects me largely because it is something that I witness regularly in the society I am living in. People are dangerously fanatical about their ideologies that they fail to keep an open mind for those who may hold diverse positions or beliefs, whether religiously or politically. Furthermore, I am attached to this topic due to my career of interest. I am committed to the study of national security; and hence, the elements that may threaten national security.
In terms of positionality, I hold that every American resident deserves a chance to enjoy his/her constitutional rights. Evidently, this is strongly impeded by the predominant nature of domestic extremism whereby a few individuals exert their radical beliefs on a group of people illegally. The positionality in this regard is that global terrorism is a primary instigator of domestic extremism.
The issue of bias in this context is the resentment for domestic extremists. There is a duality in this situation whereby even domestic extremists have reasons for their actions. It is important to avoid making biased propositions in this regard.
Research Question
The primary research question for this paper is: what is the meaning and experience of domestic extremism in the United States of America?
Conclusion
Conclusively, the phenomenon to be studied is domestic extremism in the USA. The topic is highly relevant to the American society as law enforcement agencies have been unable to completely eradicate the threat that it presents to national security. Through this paper, some elements related to domestic extremism will be explored.
