Radioisotopes Research in Radiology
Radiocarbon courting is a scientific method used to estimate the age of biological natural materials that age up to fifty thousand years. To make a clear estimate of the age of an organic cloth that existed years ago, scientists tend to identify the presence of carbo-14 issue and burns a small content of a piece of carbon-14 into carbon dioxide gas. The electrons that will be emitted by the decaying carbon-14 will be detected by means of the radiation counters, and slowly the electrons will turn into nitrogen (Higham, 14). From this point, a comparison between the carbon-14 will be made with carbon-12. Since the ration between carbon-14 and carbon-12 is the identical with all living things, the amount of carbon-14 will be measured by its half-life due to its decaying nature, while carbon-12 will remain stable. By the estimation of the ratio, the age of the organism will be identified.
Radioisotopes could also be used in medical treatment and conducting diagnosis in the medical field. Radioisotopes could be used in identifying certain types of illnesses, especially cancerous tumors (Calkins, 4). Important elements such as cobalt-60 and cesium-137 may be used to minimize the size of the tumors that are in the bodies of the patients who have cancer. In addition, Cobalt-60 could also be used to sterilize the medical tools and instruments used in surgeries. On the other hand, the radioisotopes could also be used to conduct diagnostic tests. For instance, diagnosis of the lung functionality could be used by incorporating xenon-133 to examine the malfunctions of ventilations in the lungs. In addition, other areas of hematology could also be analyzed using radioisotopes.
