The primary reason to encourage discussion during Math classes is to support the students’ ability to reason mathematically as well as communicating their reasoning with ease. If teachers and tutors commit themselves to teach for understanding, classroom discussions and discourses are the key elements that they can use effectively. Tasks and questions in mathematics do facilitate students to listen carefully to one another’s ideas upon which they can choose to disagree or agree with it. In some cases, they might question their peer’s ideas which will eventually boost their understanding. Whenever a teacher clarifies and justifies a student’s opinion, the student develops a clearer view of the ideas and thus gains a better understanding of the materials.

In the first video, most of the activities are learners-centered, and the teacher only gives directions if not clarifying and justifying the student's ideas (Talking about Math: Sharing Strategies). This is contrary to the second video, which is teachers-centered. The teacher plays a vital role in the class regarding the preparations done to keep her class organized. For instance, whenever a teacher walks into a classroom, they should ensure that the classroom is fit for learning (Divergent questioning in 8th grade Math). In addition, the teacher in the first video appears to have young students, while in the second video the students are in the eighth grade.
