Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 concerns the rights and protection of people with disabilities. The act recognizes the significance of the disabled people and argues that nor a single individual should be discriminated in opposition to receiving any Federal financial support. The U. S. Depart of Education enforces this Act through rehabilitation programs and activities that offer financial aid to public schools and other educational institutions. In the Act, the school district is anticipated to provide a "free appropriate education" (FAPE) to any qualified individual with a disability who is in the school district, regardless of the nature of the disability.
The Concept of FAPE
In a nutshell, FAPE is a customized form education program intended to meet the unique demands of each person with a disability with an educational benefit and preparedness for further education, employment, and independent living in mind. As a teacher, my role in the classroom is to ensure that students with special needs get any support they require to ensure that they get an opportunity to learn and excel in life just like an able student.
Challenges Faced as a Teacher
While it is easy to assume that as a teacher, you are prepared to handle many different cases, including those children with disabilities, my concern regards the extent to which I am supposed to offer my services to such students. As much as extending humanitarian services to people with disabilities is a good thing, there are limitations considering that teachers are not trained to handle some medical conditions. Additionally, I am concerned about the role of the government in offering any support to the teachers handling children with disabilities, particularly those working in a normal school. Accordingly, it is important to know when and where to put the boundaries to avoid being overworked and ending up with work burn out.
