According to Chris Hendrickson, a civil engineering professor emeritus, an autonomous vehicle is not a common occurrence, making it a disruptive technology until people become familiar with it. Besides, Roger Cohen, a policy director at PDT, argue that based on the survey, there is a need for public education before the adoption of the technology. Although self-driving vehicles would characterize positive effect on traffic death, Cohen believes that the state must put in place safety standards to the effect of testing of self –driving vehicles.
Furthermore, Raj Rajkumar, a co-director of CMU’S Autonomous Collaborative Research Laboratory and General Motors Connected asserts that the technology is still in infancy and as such, failures are likely. He attributes the failures to the reported fatal crash of a fully automated Tesla as well as reports of Uber vehicles running red lights in San Francisco as evidence of the need for technological advancements. As such, he is of the opinion that there is a need for more time for the technology to mature to get public acceptance.
Besides, Baldwin, an associate professor says that the public is currently slow to accept technological changes in transportation though that will change once they become familiar with the advancements. Nonetheless, the AAA is now focused on educating the public about the benefits associated with self-driving vehicles (Blazina par. 15).
