Similarities of Wirth’s and Buckley’s Perspectives of City Life
For those attempting to relocate from one city to another, life can be difficult. For those moving from country to highly populated and wealthy cities, however, this transition becomes more challenging. In his book Urbanism as a Way of Life, sociologist Louis Wirth muses on the various meanings of urbanism. He held that population size, density, and societal heterogeneity were the three elements that made up city life. (Wirth 9). Interactions in contemporary cities can be described as shallow. Buckley agrees that it has become more difficult to make friends when a city with people keep having excuses about the inconvenience of the suggested times or days (Buckley). Wirth and Buckley are authors who lived in different worlds considering the difference in their times of writing being almost seventy years apart. However, the striking similarities between their articles suggest that city life has certain characteristics that are static about it. For instance, both writers easily describe cities as areas where people are busy dealing with their individual issues, which often results in massive loneliness. Often, the city changes an individual because they have to adapt to its environments; lifestyle and behavior changes. Mr. Ingesrol has to acknowledge losing chances of making friendships thanks to the busy city life as he had to attend to his full-time job (Buckley). In this process, it is easy for people to become individualists who care only about themselves. The two authors, Cara Buckley and Louis Wirth, in their publications, are able to define the characteristics of city life. Cities, regardless of geographical location or time of existence, have similar characteristics, which usually minimize human interactions as opposed to rural-based life.
