Social loafing
Social loafing and striving abound in our workplace. Social loafing occurs when people put forth more effort when working alone rather than in groups. Individuals who are social strivers, on the other hand, excel better when working in groups than when working alone. When team members put in less effort to attain the established goal, the group is likely to be less productive due to social loafing. Group members, for example, will compete with one another because no one wants to labor more than the other. Eventually, everyone will be performing a small bit of the task, and some will go unfinished. As a team leader, there are some directions I use to help my team achieve the set goal and also provide positive benefits to all the group members.
I usually ensure that all members contribute equally by writing a group contract. The agreement assists in setting the team's individual's responsibilities, expectation, and discipline methods. Measurable responsibilities should be given to each team member to avoid blame games. For instance, if a person is responsible for keeping work records and fail to do so, then the same person is held accountable and answerable. Solving such a mess will not be a problem because there is someone I can point fingers and has the responsibility of clearing the mess. Therefore, team contract plays a significant role to ensure that there is equal contribution among the group members.
Establishing rules, in the beginning, has also helped me ensure that all the team members contribute equally and achieve the organization's objectives and set goals. For example, timekeeping is an essential aspect and must be taken seriously. Every member must sign in at work right on time, go for a break as scheduled, and cover particular given time as instructed by myself as the group leader. I also ensure everyone signs out of work at promptly and not before the actual time. Additionally, during working hours, I assess all my team members to ensure everyone is working and no one is lazing around. The team will be more productive when the set rules are well followed.
Group discussion also plays a significant role in team work. I usually encourage my team to attend regular meetings by making them mandatory. Also, every member gets an opportunity to speak and mention some issues during the meeting. For instance, I point out each member to give out a suggestion that will help improve the group performance. By doing that, every member feels they are valued, and their ideas count. Consequently, with well-managed discussion, excellent performance is achieved.
Equal contribution by team members motivates each other to work collectively to achieve a common goal. Additionally, as a team leader, I always ensure that I serve as an example to the team by following the rules and doing my work to my best. Appreciating the good job done by the team members will also motivate the members to work extra hard for better performance.
