Sociology Discussion
This research study discusses various aspects of sociology in connection with the application of Kohlberg’s three stages of moral development. The three stages of Kohlberg's are pre-conventional , conventional, and post conventional .Pre-conventional is based in obedience and punishment orientation, egocentric difference to superior power or prestige or trouble avoiding set. This analysis and prescription of moral stages is based upon my own personal experience as it helps me to distinguish between right and wrong based upon my own understanding. The conventional or normal stage is associated to the social norms and popular moral standards set on the basis of collective understanding of things and declaring things as morally ‘good’ or ‘bad’. Usually the conventional stage is associated with the declaration of a moral perspective as per orientation or incline of other people’s approval. I feel it an important part of my own personality to become morally acceptable in the light of other people’s common understanding of morality. This personality segment facilitates me in drawing a clear distinction between the things that I should do and/ or the things that I should not do. The other part is post conventional that is based upon the self acceptability as per morality based rules and regulations.
These principles are defined by considering the fact of acceptability of shareable moral standards and duties versus rights paradigm. These standards are related to the inner satisfaction and taking internal decision making as the primary factor to set them at personal level. This second stage is also important for me to consider for a better personality development in terms of psychological and sociological principles. The overall context of the socialization and moral values that we prefer to follow is based upon the social norms practiced in our societies and what people around us think morally wrong is wrong for us too. This is normal decision making pattern for us as human beings that most of us do possess and our internal satisfaction paradigm works on this pattern to distinguish and declare a particular action as right or wrong. These norms become acceptable or reject able to the societies based upon their cultural background and civilization diversity. The old civilizations have a different approach to address a particular human specific concern or moral question as compared to the civilizations of later time. Therefore social and cultural norms are clearly dependent upon the overall experiences of human beings living in a community. Hence, we can clearly set the primary agents that play vital role in defining the moral values in our personality as our family lives, schooling, our friendships and also the mass media. Now a days, social media has also become an important stakeholder in spreading the acceptable moral values and standards among different communities and cross cultures at global level. People have a better sense of social interactivity using the internet and they come to know different moral values and standards preferred by other communities and groups of individuals. They can argue or ask why a particular moral value is acceptable or reject able in a particular society or community of people. This has enhanced a chance of developing a collective consensus of human beings at global or regional level to set new trends related to the morality (Kendall 2015).
