Soft drinks are harmful to the human body
Soft drinks are often served with snacks for many people all over the world. The tragedy is that many people are unaware of the dangers they are putting themselves in by regularly consuming large amounts of soft drinks. For many people, soda and juice are the best alternatives to water. On the other hand, soft drinks are a killer of the human body, according to many studies, some of which have been published in traditional print media and on the internet. Non-alcoholic drinks come in a variety of flavors. Juices, carbonates, nectars, still drinks, squash, fruit powders, energy drinks, and sports drinks are among them (Kregiel, 2015). Each of the non-alcoholic beverages mentioned above has a list of ingredients that make it fall under the category of soft drinks. For instance, drinking water becomes a soft drink once it is bottled and loaded with minerals (Kregiel, 2015). However, most essentially, it is important first to understand that the problem with most soft drinks that makes it unsuitable for the human body is the sugars and sweeteners with which they are loaded. According to Ilaslan, Boyaci, and Topcu (2015), most soft drinks contain sugars in large quantities. Surprisingly, many sugar components including glucose, fructose, and sucrose are loaded into those soft drinks so as to sweeten them and appeal to the consumers. At the same time, it is the sweet and appealing taste of the sweetened soft drinks that is the allure of the consumers, especially young children.
According to Vermunt, Pasman, Schaafsma and Kardinaal (2003), one of the dangers of consuming too much sugar is the increase in body weight which limits the potential of humans to engage in the necessary physical activity. In line with what Vermunt et al. (2003) say, Kregiel (2015) states that “Overconsumption of sugars can cause adverse health effects, such as obesity, diabetes mellitus, or nonalcoholic fatty liver disease” (p.3). As already known, the conditions mentioned above can be life threatening, and in most cases have limited the human from operating normally. For instance, obese people cannot engage in physical activity correctly, thus, attracting other opportunistic ailments such as hypertension. Therefore, the inability of the human body to function well because of what are sometimes referred to as lifestyle diseases is what labels some soft drinks as detrimental to the human body.
While no research shows that bottled water can be harmful to the body, it goes back to standards, where legislation is categorical and the quality of drinks that must be packaged and sold in the market. The only danger that soft drinks such as water and nectars pose to the humans is that while they are expected to be purely natural a way of preserving them must be found. Usually, any soft drink must contain one or more of other ingredients that are either meant to preserve of making the taste better. The process of preparing them involves adding ingredients such as carbon dioxide, acidulants, chemical preservatives, food colors, antioxidants and many others that make them potentially risky to the human body (Kregiel, 2015). Therefore, consumption of soft drinks must be limited since they contain some chemicals that can be potentially hazardous to the balance of body chemicals thereby causing health problems.
