stroke case study
Amanda is 64 years old and has been smoking cigarettes for 20 years. She is diagnosed with stroke through her personal and medical history records. Her medical history includes experiencing Transient Ischemic Attack ( TIA), previous stroke, had a heart attack, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Hypertension (HTN), Myocardial Infarction (MI), and Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA). TIA can be caused by thromboembolism. Most Ischemic strokes are caused by posterior circulation stroke. For Amanda, her Central Nervous System (CNS) has shown bleeding, and this is due to hypertension. The patient has shown several risk factors such as smoking, ischemic heart condition, and TIA (Kernan et al., 2014). Her personal history includes smoking, does not drink alcohol, sudden blurred vision, and widowed.
Amanda uses various medications that help prevent further strokes. She uses maximum dose of 10 mg of Norvasc daily to prevent hypertension. The recommended dose of 75 mg of Plavix daily helps her reduce the rate of the collective endpoint of MI and recent case of stroke. 40 mg of Lipitor daily helps reduce the risk of myocardial infarction and fatal stroke. Also, she uses Albuterol med nebulizer Q6H and Q2H to handle the problem of shortness of breath. Advair inhaler helps her control the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The drug therapy she is supposed to follow is to have anticoagulant and antiplatelet medicines to prevent blood clots. Other medications include statins to reduce the risk of another stroke, blood pressure medicines to control hypertension, and other medicines for reducing pain after stroke. The follow-up care she is supposed to attend in 3 months includes home care, nutritional, and rehabilitation programs. Rehabilitation program will help her return to her routine in a short time; the nutritional program will help he remain healthy and strong. Home care program ensures that she stays in a safe environment (Kernan et al., 2014).
