Surgery of Cataract
The Importance of Cataract Surgery
The clouding of the lens interior a person’s eye that causes vision loss is recognized as a cataract. Cataract is a disorder that is common amongst the older people, and it cannot be corrected with contact lenses, glasses or even surgery of the corneal refractive such as LASIK. Therefore, cataract surgical treatment is referred as the procedure that is conducted to deal with cataracts. It is where the lens that is inside a character eye that causes dark, blurry or cloudy vision is eliminated and replaced with a glass that is artificial referred to as IOL or an intraocular lens to restore one's clear vision. The paper will briefly provide an explanation for the reason why the cataract surgery is imperative to an individual suffering from cataract. According to research that has been conducted at the University of California, the surgery usually improves a person’s vision/ eyesight. Also, it was found that the cataract surgery could also lower the risk of dying of an individual (The JAMA Network Journals). About 74044 women with cataracts were examined including 42736 people who underwent the cataract surgery, and it was found that the women who experienced the cataract surgery improved their vision and were less likely to die than those who did not undergo surgery. It is because, before the operation, cataract patients cannot see clearly due to blur vision and when they experience the surgery, their eyesight is restored (The JAMA Network Journals).
Reduction in Risk of Death
The study also found that about 37% of the women who underwent the cataract surgery reduced the risk of death due to cancer, vascular and neurologic disease, infectious, accidents and also pulmonary (Fernández-Buenaga and Alió 372). In that, when an individual has undergone surgery, he or she will have a clear vision that will reduce the rate of death because they will be able to avoid accidents such as fatal car accident. Patients will also be able to take care of themselves and even improve their health status. The cataract surgery also lowers the odds of the premature deaths for both women and men (Fernández-Buenaga and Alió 378).
Conclusion
In conclusion, cataract surgery is one of the safest ways of improving eyesight and it also reduces the mortality rate. Moreover, an individual need to ensure they go for eye checkup once in a while, exercise, eat healthily, take medicines to stay healthy and increase lifespan. The study also had a limitation in that it only focused on women and did not indicate how the surgery will influence the old men.
