When a data is copied and stored, this is known as a backup, alternatively, a recovery is defined as the capability of a group or firm to restore its systems back to an original state after a chaotic event (Hitchcock and Willard 83).
These types of events can prevent backed-up data from being recovered. Businesses are founded on various principles which are designed to produce success and development and all business should be responsible for their development and sustenance. In business environment, disasters are inevitable, and business should have a recovery and backup strategy. In fact, their backup strategy should be topnotch so that whatever hits them is something they have control over. Undeniably, without such preparedness, many businesses would suffer greatly.
When disasters strike, four key elements are impacted.
First, they disrupt communication channels rendering vertical and horizontal sharing of information impossible. A good example is when there is a power outage. Second, the impact may be physical, thus, destroying property such as equipment and the office premises. The third type of impact is when transport is affected to the extent that there is no movement of goods and services to and from the business outlet. The last effect of a catastrophe on an organization happens when there is a blockage of vital utilities. For instance, services such as gas, electricity, internet, and telephony – all needed for the business continuity- might be halted for hours, hence, affecting operations if the organization was not prepared (Edlund).
That being said, businesses need to operate profitably to remain in existence.
Indeed, competition will always be a constant and no single business wants to lose its clients/customers due to unpreparedness when it comes to disaster management.
Therefore, an organization needs a business continuity plan to enhance emergency preparedness.
Especially, such as plan should allow the business to continue uninterrupted even with the emergency happening around. Essentially, such a plan should have three components. To begin with, there is the need for a business impact analysis that identifies all the core business functions that a business cannot run without, and what impact a catastrophe would have on them. This allows for the safeguarding of such elements so as not to be caught unexpectedly. Second, as a rule of the thumb, every organization must have an emergency notification system which enables emergency services such as fire services to respond on time. Lastly, every business should have a backup of their technology systems. Such include data centers and uninterrupted power supplies that enhance smooth continuity and retrieval of any lost data (Edlund).
To add to the above, organizations should make sure that the elements of the backup recovery plan are periodically checked to ensure that they are failsafe.
For instance, it is important to inspect if the backup batteries are still in good condition since they might have lost all their charge as a result of not being used for long. Thus, a business might have a continuity plan which cannot mitigate anything.
To conclude, business components ensure the emergence and sustenance of an organization.
Indeed, this is an obligation that must be met for the sake of all the stakeholders. Nonetheless, disaster strikes and an organization must have a backup and recovery plan. To add, a business must explore new ways to keep itself sustainable. Without such, organizations will lose their competitiveness.
