T2: Trainspotting: Arts Array-Film
T2: Trainspotting: Arts Array-Film The T2 Trainspotting film event I attended, dubbed Arts Array-film, took place on November 13th, 2017. It was free to watch the 118-minute film if you were a student or a college staff member with a valid ID; other members of the group charged $7.75. It's a funny, frightening piece with a lot of bold visual flourishes. It also has a punchy vitality to it, as well as a hopeless sadness and stubborn pessimism. The film primarily acts as a revival of 1990s uncool Britannia as a brutal and treacherous black comedy. T2 Trainspotting also tackles topics like middle-aged male disappointment and death phobia. Even without recapturing the original’s subversive thrill of its classical predecessor, the film effectively adds an emotionally, intoxicating resonant postscript. However, T2 Trainspotting is not as good as T1 considering that it longer and unwinds into self-mythologizing and caper sentimentality.
Ironically, according to some critics, the movie’s greatest strength happens to be its weakness. In essence, the director of the film is careful to inject copious energy through his editing style, bold musical tendencies, and electric shot choices. Moreover, the movie is efficient in utilizing modern visual dynamics such as mobile phone camera photography and floating subtitles. On the other hand, although the effects are forceful, it is difficult to determine whether these choices have been born naturally out of the story, or the director sought to recreate the immediacy of the previous movie. As such, the most significant aspect of the film becomes its greatest weakness. Another critical point is that even though T2 trainspotting keeps the audience engaged and excited, it invites the comparison to a much better film (White 223). From my perspective, the film shows that it is impossible to rise above past life and experiences.
After watching the movie, I discovered that there are forms of addiction as depicted by the various characters. For example, on the one hand, Sickboy is addicted to cocaine, while Begbie is addicted to violence; on the other side, Renton’s parents are glued to the TV, which is considered as a form of addiction. It is of the essence to realize that every individual suffers from their kind of addiction in some shape or way. Also, by taking the audience through the life of an addict, T2: Trainspotting helps one understand the causes and effects. For instance, in a scene with Spud, Renton tells him that detoxing the body is not as crucial as detoxing the mind since being an addict is part of mental thinking and a mindset (White 224). The characters acknowledge that being addicted is part of life; however, a person should find healthy things to be addicted to, which have no devastating impacts.
Essentially, the film addresses the cultural differences between the 1990s and 2010s; the director attempts to recapture youthful lust for life. For instance, Renton who used to fill the gaping holes in his life with skag now fills them with fantasies of a perfect family and exercise. In the same way, the once psychopathic Begbie who would have gladly glassed any of the boys 20 years ago, is presently undergoing man-therapy, which helps him face the demons that lurk at his dark, sensitive core. Evidently, it is as though the director wants to depict the extremes of behavior that the characters have gone through over the past 20 years. It shows the anxiety and emotions that comes with responsibilities of children or lack of, as well life’s disappointments. Arguably, T2 Trainspotting does not show the youth culture that was the central theme in the predecessor movie.
