Teachers' Role
The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct outlines some ideas that act as guidelines for the teachers. The first principle of not harming children or discriminating them resonates with my belief as a future instructor. The principle goes above and beyond not just hurting the children, but additionally ensuring that no one else harms them. As a future teacher, I will spend ample time with the students to create a friendly environment for them. Spending time with the teenagers means that I have the unique probability to watch them grow, learn, make mistakes and discover themselves. I will, therefore, take each available opportunity to assist them, nurture and protect them. I will strive to keep a relationship that encourages free speech and communication that allow the children to confide in me in cases of imminent threat to harm.
Another vital principle is the use of multiple sources of information to provide learning opportunities for children. Today, it is not enough to only expose children to theoretical work. There are many other aspects of life that children need to learn about- socially, culturally, spiritually, and politically (Freeman & Feeney, 2005). It is sad to see learned students with minimal socializing skills and inability to express their opinions in public. There is a need for the students to understand that success is determined by both general curriculum and practical experiences.
Following the two highlighted principles, the primary role of a teacher constitutes creating a foundation for an all-around individual well versed with all aspects of life. A teacher should help the students understand that education is more than just passing the exams. The teacher should also play the role of a protector and a defender for the children. The role entails protecting all students from intended harm or other physical or emotional attacks (Freeman, 2016).
