The Architecture of Islamic houses
Islamic Architecture
Muslim houses are designed to represent the Muslim culture and their religious beliefs. This Islamic Art dates back to 650- 1220 years ago where the art and architectural works ardently expressed the connection of the Muslim cultures and traditions.
The attached plan shows the Umayyad mosque and the Great mosque of Damascus. Mosques strongly adhere to this plan. The first design that was similar to this was seen in the years 85 - 96 AH of the Islamic calendar and this corresponds with 705- 715 A.D. It consists of a massive courtyard (sahn) in the middle with three minarets where calls for prayers are made. There is also the Mihrab which is a wall indicating the direction where all Muslims face while praying. Another important feature of the art is the Qubba. This is dome-shaped construction which represents the presence and authority of heaven. A standard Islam art is constructed from various material such as stone, tiles marbles and decorative mosaic. There are other decorative calligraphy with quotations from Quran found inside the mosque. The Mihrab is usually well decorated with Islamic cartouche inscriptions.
While this courtyard in the middle is found in the Christian architecture too, the justification that this is an entirely an Islam mosque plan is inherent in how it has remained consistent across generation since it was constructed in 715 A.D. This plan has however, been modified throughout history in order to accommodate the number of people visiting the area. An example of such example is Mecca which receive millions of Muslims in pilgrim thus the courtyard has extensively been increased (Bloom, Jonathan, and Sheila Blair pg. 140)
Below is a bird’s eye view of the mosque showing the Sahn, the Mihrab and three Minarets.
I have attached the artistic impression alongside the plan for easy comprehension.
