The Ethical Dilemma in Health Care
One of the main ethical issues that face personnel and health care providers is the relationship between physicians, patients, and managed care organizations. According to Kominski (2013) the ethical issue revolves around issues such as denial of care, confining referral to specialists, and gag rules that prohibit health care providers from informing patients about alternative treatment options. Pozgar (2014), notes that the relationship between the patients and the health care providers prohibits them from discussing financial arrangements that may include incentives for the patient. In general, this is an ethical issue that affects current providers of health care and their personnel. The causes of the ethical issue include the patient’s lack of financial arrangements during treatment. The health care personnel face an ethical issue on whether to advise the patient on the financial options available or deny them care. The other cause of the ethical issue is the specialists the physician may be referred to may be a friend or family member of the health care personnel, and this result to an ethical dilemma.
According to Kominski (2013), one of the solutions to such an ethical dilemma is making a requirement for such information to be made public. This way the patients will not put the health care providers and their personnel in an awkward position of providing such information. Nevertheless, Cherry and Jacob (2016) argue that there is need to develop a policy that would guide the disclosure of such information. Kominski notes that even though the information will be made public, the poor and the illiterate will still find it a task to choose an ideal health care plan. In general, the federal government should ensure that the public is well-informed on such decisions so as to make better decisions.
