The Existentialism Theory
Existentialism is a metaphysical approach that emphasizes human beings' life as the ultimate determinants of their fate and creation by acts of will. Existentialists have the power over the main facets of their life at some stage in their lives. When some parts of their lives are problematic, they know what to do to make themselves feel better. They think the universe has everything to sell. They find it easy to find solutions to both simple and complicated problems in their lives. Existentialists believe they are brilliant because they exploit obvious disadvantages in their life to their benefit (Sartre et al. 7). They have a widespread perception of assigning almost all things numerical values.
Robert seems to an ultimate existentialist since he is control of his life. He appears to know the answers to virtually every issue that doesn’t feel right. He gave Catherine an option to opt for in case she felt she could not sleep. He tells her to do mathematics when she found herself in such a situation. Roberts has a significant relationship with numbers that’s why he likes them. He is fond of connecting dots, studying proofs and numerical values (Benjamin 3). Robert basically began with the control of his life. Everything in his life seems to be working out just as he had expected. He tries his best to ensure that he does something that is elegant in his own way. Robert loved winter whereas everyone else did hate it.
On the other hand, Catherine is a learning existentialist since she seems lost in her own life. She can’t sleep at night, and she doesn’t know the reason behind that. She is urged by Robert to do some Mathematics whenever she found herself unable to sleep. This clearly shows that Catherine is not in control of her life. Everything in her life seems to be falling apart. There are times she takes irrational actions that aren’t quite definitive (Sartre et al. 2). A case scenario is when she calls the cops with the thought that her friend Hal was stealing her father’s book. As it turns out, Hal was only taking the book so that he would give it back to Catherine as a birthday gift.
Catherine did not understand almost all aspects of her life. With time and the help of Claire, she begins to understand herself better. Notably, this might be due to the disease inheritance. Claire convinced her to move with her to New York, but at first, she had difficulties accepting the offer. In the end, she agreed to accompany Claire to NY so that she may seek the kind of assistance she needed there (Sartre et al. 5). While in NY with Claire, Catherine starts to be a learning existentialist. She starts to pull herself together. Also, she begins to understand herself better. In the midst of realizing her inner being, she discovers her talent that she has kept locked with her all her life.
Conclusion
There are elements of our lives that we can’t change but if we focus on the key components of these elements, we might modify the shape of the future and destiny. We may be bound to a lot in life, but we are the drivers of our destinies. Catherine spent her all life not understand herself but later on, she discovers how to better life through different dimensions. Every action and word we say in this life does matter at some point in time.
