The Importance of Technology in UNE Medical Center
In the contemporary healthcare surroundings, the incorporation of technology is key to facilitate the effective delivery of services (Cresswell, & Sheikh, 2013). In this regard, UNE Medical Center needs to analyze its technology needs to foster the delivery of healthcare to the parties requiring their services. Particularly, the integration of an EHR system in the facility requires the needs and readiness assessments to gauge the appropriateness of the technology in fostering the offering of quality services to patients (Ginsberg, 2007).
The needs assessment reveals that UNE Medical Center requires the integration of the CPOE and Cardiology modules to be in line with MU requirements and improve information management respectively. The integration of an effective EHR system in the facility is also important since it improves the management of patient information (Ghazisaeidi, Ahmadi, Sadoughi, & Safdari, 2014). The institution also needs a pharmacy system to boost patient safety and CPOE systems. Further, the need for improving the telehelth system of the organization proves to be key in facilitating the delivery of services to diverse communities. Besides, the relevance of sharing patient information prompts the organization to incorporate a HIE interface.
Furthermore, the automation of systems including billing, ADT/Registration, HIM and ROI is crucial for improving the efficiency of processes within the organization (Ghazisaeedi, Mohammadzadeh, Safdari, Sharifian, & Rahimi, 2013). Moreover, the organization is in need of a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) to foster the implementation of the technology systems besides reinforcing its staff. The readiness assessment revealed that the healthcare organization gets influenced by the commitment, capacity, capability, and culture that would enhance the fulfillment of its technology needs (Ahmadi, Damanabi, & Sadoughi, 2014).
Particularly, the UNE Medical Center has shown commitment towards incorporating an advanced EHR technology as well as providing an interface for its HIE and HIM systems. Further, the capacity of the organization is denoted by its willingness to incorporate technology to reach rural communities besides aligning the necessary staff. However, the absence of a CMIO officer and inadequate staff undermines the capability of the organization. Moreover, organizational culture plays a crucial role in facilitating the adoption of change. In this respect, the healthcare organization has shown embracement of change and thus, foster the integration of technology systems.
