The Movie The Lion King
Question one
The film The Lion King corresponds to Hegel's belief that Africa is not a part of the historical setting. Hegel argues that Africa shows no signs of progress due to its unchanging natural conditions (1956). As a result, cultural and theological influences are unable to change over time. According to Gooding William, The Lion King attempts to express the same message as Hegel by saying that Africa is surrounded by a cycle of natural occurrences. Gooding William seems to devote too much time to Hegel because of the parallels between Hegel's philosophy and the African message in The Lion King.

Question two
After comparing Hegel’s ideas to that of The Lion King, Gooding William talks of Rafiki and Scar, characters from the movie. Rafiki is a baboon who is a priest, whose purpose is to bring back integrity. Gooding points out that the relevance of the priest character in the movie as representing Black African divination rites and spiritual norms. Scar is an agent of spiritual loss and decline as he is a revolutionary who is aiming at changing the repetitive circle of life but does not succeed. He ends up ruining the natural order and this represents Africa’s attempt to enter history which disrupts the existing perfect state.
Question three
Gooding William holds that Disney plays an important role relaying a political message amongst the American audience, which is his thesis. He believes that movies have a role beyond entertainment and they can be effective in conveying certain political agendas. Disney’s Lion King portrays Africa as a cycle of life that exists naturally and is not susceptible to change, which is a Euro-centric perception of Africa.

Question four
Following the example of The Lion King I agree with Gooding William’s ideology on the purpose of film being political. Gooding William strengthens his argument by placing a certain geographical area in The Lion King in an American setting. The place hyenas stalk Nala and Simba is the inner American urban area because voices and poor settlements that represent the hyenas can be identified as Black and Latino. The political agenda in this scene is that the Black and Latino community does belong rightfully in America. However, Gooding William does not explain the audience's perception of The Lion King.
