The rationale of the Nesmith and Ruhland's research on the children of incarcerated parents
The rationale for Nesmith and Ruhland's research on children of incarcerated parents can be seen in the fact that most studies do not consider victims' opinions, instead relying heavily on information provided by adults who interact with them. As a result, these children's empirical point of view leaves significant data unknown (Nesmith & Ruhland, 2008). Five major themes emerged from the interviews conducted for this study: resiliency, social challenges, attention, and awareness of adult needs, prison conceptions, and caregiver conceptions (Nesmith & Ruhland, 2008). Children had difficulty expressing the situation of one of their parents being in prison due to the concept of the social challenge. Secondly, the interviewed children indicated a sense of awareness of the whole condition and saw the need to fill the gap for the imprisoned parent. Besides, these children were eager to maintain the relationship with the incarcerated parent and seem to have a perception of prisons as a secured place, though not luxurious. Finally, coping with the situation is one of the major challenges outlined in the study showing children joining resiliency activities such as theatre.
The study recommends the use of community programs to increase the awareness of children and the establishment of plans considering their needs in the sentencing procedures
