The Role of the Counselor in Counseling
The counselor is friendly and welcoming to the clients. It is evident that the counselor first establishes a good relationship with a person before starting his counseling session. When Bill walks in, the counselor warmly welcomes him and makes Bill feel comfortable by telling him to choose a seat. This creates a convenient mode of conversation, and thus makes Bill be honest in expressing his feelings and thoughts. The counselor is also patient to listen carefully and seeks clarification where he does not understand. Bill tells the counselor that his wife told him to find a counselor because he has anger management issues. Here, the counselor listens to everything Bill says, and he does not interrupt him. He also seeks clarification when Bill’s statements sound confusing (Laureate Education Inc., 2012).
Ineffective Counseling Behavior
Ineffective characteristics evident in the counselor is that he is forgetful. This is seen at the end of the conversation when he tells Bill that he forgot to get him sigh the-the informed consent. This is an important form that should have first been signed when Bill walked in to inform him that everything they discuss is confidential. Again, Bill would have first known that confidentiality could be broken if he threatens to harm himself. This paints a wrong picture to Bill and could make him opt for another counselor. This is because one is able to conclude that the counselor is forgetful and thus will be incapable of handling the problems affecting a client if he cannot be able to remember simple things (Erford, 2017). Forgetfulness could mean lack of focus whereas a counselor is expected to be an alert person. Another ineffective behavior is that the counselor seems to be a punisher and quickly jumps into saying things without thinking. The counselor says that the client threatens the wife and this makes the client clarify that it is not what he meant (Laureate Education Inc., 2012). Again, instead of solving the client's problem first, he wants to involve his wife and even suggests that he should go and bring her. However, he immediately realizes that he is wrong and that it was an abrupt jump. The client even asserts that this is a mistake. This is a significant weakness that could make the lose client trust in the competitiveness of the counselor.
How Counselling is affected
Being cordial, warm, and friendly is a natural step in setting a mood for conversation. It instills confidence in the clients and makes them feel comfortable when explaining their problems. The counselor has a comfortable personality that offers a conducive environment for the session. This relationship enhances positivity in the counseling session and significantly contribute to the successfulness of the season (Milne, 2011). Having patients to listen to clients enables them to explain themselves the pressing problem fully. Patients communicate to the client that he is the center of the session and that he has the right to explain his or herself thoroughly. This factor enables the counselor to make an informed decision. Clarification enables the counselor to iron out any contradicting issues. However, the idea of forgetfulness is harmful as this would make the one to overlook significant issues that are surrounding the problem of the client. Additionally, jumping into conclusions as evidenced by the counselor could make him, or she comes to a wrong decision. Also, the client feels that he is being punished and therefore could fail to express himself effectively (Erford, 2017).
