The Song of Roland
My chosen text is the Song of Roland. I decided to research about this text because it highlights the constituents of a person's identity which include religion, country, and family. The three factors contribute to the text's layout regarding how leaders use their powers to tackle their grievances within and beyond the boundaries of family. Moreover, the aspect of war resolution and the techniques applied such as negotiation and navy strategy, are included in this narrative. This is quite interesting as it is relevant in this present world. Finally, this text is ‘all in one,' that is, lyrical, exciting, dramatic, funny as properly as tragic. This shows how much we had in common with feudal audiences and authors.

This source is significant in explaining how religion played a substantial role within the middle ages hierarchy. At the top of the feudal system is God, followed by his vassal Charlemagne who was succeeded by different ranks of vassals. God is identified as the supreme authority who can punish or reward a vassal based on loyalty above everything. Moreover, this source can detect instances of bias in the Song of Roland that was mostly due to religious differences.”

This second source gives a historical background of the Song of Roland's settings. A sneak preview of the social issues, as well as contemporary military within Western Europe, is explained in depth. For instance, the aspect of how knights perceived themselves before they engaged in battle is highlighted instead of focusing entirely on knights about wars.”

Finally, the given sources explains the clear delineation between good and evil which was due to religious affiliations. In the middle ages, one was automatically considered evil if he or she did not ascribe to Christianity. The role of Charlemagne and Roland is outlined through the use of Christological symbolism while reinforcing the aspect of social unity.”
