The State Government
There are 4500 words in the U.S. Constitution. 4000 words were committed to explaining how the three departments of the U.S. government can act and function. The first 52 words in the constitution, though, are the most important. They explain the six key reasons for which the United States Constitution was drawn up, the object of which is to specify and regulate the remainder of the terms in the text. These terms are important because they dictate and direct us as to how to read the U.S. constitution. The words “We the People” emphasize that the document affects the U.S. citizens directly and that these regulations have not been imposed on the country. The six main purposes for which the constitution was written emphasize the constitution was ordained and established in order to connect states, promote justice and fairness, ensure peace in the country, provide for the defense of the nation, promote welfare and secure liberty (Cmseibert, 2009).
The Separation of Powers in the Constitution
The U.S. Constitution separates power among three branches of the government, which include the Legislature, the executive, and the judiciary. The legislative branch (legislature) includes the House of Representatives and the Senate. Some of the roles of the legislature include borrowing and coining money, regulating commerce and immigration, conducting impeachments and declaring war. The executive branch is headed by the president who serves as the commander in chief, appoints ambassadors and judges, enforces U.S. laws, signs treaties and grants pardons. The judiciary receives appeals from courts and states, makes a principled judgment and ensures jury trials. To balance the powers of the three branches, the legislature is designed as slightly more powerful, as is it closer to the people. The Congress establishes the jurisdiction of the court and impeaches judges. The president is often powerful in war while the judiciary checks and balances the other branches (Cmseibert, 2009).
