The Vastness of the Dark
Freedom and its Importance
Freedom is stated to be granted when a person is given the power to act, speak or assume without any hindrance or constraint. On the other hand, freedom generally exists in the absence of a despotic government. Therefore, whenever there is freedom people can have their thoughts in a manner that is free and independent. In each and every society, everyone yearns for freedom especially at all levels of their lives. But, it is now not easy to guarantee everyone freedom given that the rights of other people must be respected. This ability that whenever there need to protect an individual’s rights, human beings must look at the likely impact this move should have on other people. This is the reason many people tend to be resistant to various laws and regulations since they view them as impediments to their long-sought freedom. Therefore, in any social setting freedom is necessary to the survival of humankind.
Unrealized Freedom and Its Effects
There are many instances where it cannot say that freedom is guaranteed. This typically applies to a scenario where a person escapes his or her country to seek freedom abroad. In the Vastness of the darkness, the author introduces a character named James who wants to free his country to explore freedom in a foreign land. This attitude is eager to move to a new place where he will continue with his monotonous beliefs. James wants to escape his hometown since he considered himself as a prisoner who has not enjoyed any freedom for a long time. What will happen to those who will be left behind? Therefore, the kind of freedom he is seeking, in this case, is not guaranteed. This is because this liberty will not be enjoyed by other members of the society in which he hails from. As such, when freedom is guaranteed it should be able to be enjoyed by other members of the organization. To his dismay, James gets disappointed since he does not get the kind of freedom he so desired. He, later on, discovers that the only place he can get comfort is home.
Obstacles to Guaranteed Freedom
When obstacles such as greed, selfishness as well as ego are removed, it is not an indication that freedom is guaranteed. In this story, women are oppressive even if men have been left out of this story. But, there are instances where women are seen denying their fellow women freedom. This is because they are seen destroying other fellow women especially those who lacked a name. This behavior is eminent especially in the last chapter of this book where girls are seen tormenting each other on the playground.
Sacrificing Others for Freedom
On one hand freedom cannot by guaranteed by sacrificing other people. Basing our example on the Bethlehem essay the father of Ann Frank was utterly wrong when he chose the same hiding place form his family. This is because his actions ended up claiming the lives of his family members. The best thing he would have done was to choose different hiding places for his family members as this move could not expose them to danger.
Conclusion
In conclusion, every individual has the right to enjoy freedom. As such, democracy is only guaranteed if it is appreciated by all members of the society. Therefore, people should not run away from the challenges which affecting them but instead face them. This is because if people run away from those problems, there is no freedom that will be guaranteed. Consequently, all people should meet all the hurdles during our quest for freedom.
