Titration Usage for Identification of an Unknown Acid
The substitution of three chloro derivatives of the acetic acid are stated to become tri-, di-, and mono-chloroacetic acids. The use of conventional strategies measures the attached proton that is in the oxygen atom. What is not acidic is the hydrogen that is blended with the carbon. All the acids contain different KA figures that signify carboxylic acid protons. The figures of the KA are shown in the table below: Table 1 Acid type KA figure Acetic 1.8 instances 10-5 Monochloroacetic 1.35 times 10-3 Dichloroacetic 4.5 times 10-2 Trichloroacetic 0.2 Purpose The goal of the experiment is the identification of an unknown acid solution that will end result into one among the above-mentioned acids. The result will be achieved though the determination of the KA value in the reaction using the titration data and the provided information.

The use of qualitative identification with the use of pH indicators too can be used to determine the KA value.
Method of the Experiment
Identification using quantitative technique
- A buffer solution is used to calibrate a pH meter with the set pH values of 7, 4, and 10. Te bench instructions were followed in doing the calibration.
- A solution of an unrecognized acid was taken from the TA.
- The measure of the unknown acid was 25mL and was transferred to a beaker of 100mL using a volumetric pipette measuring 25mL.
- The solution in the beaker was treated using a NaOH solution that was provided.
- The titration process started at 3mL and kept increasing at estimated levels of 0.25mL.
- Afterwards the titration was done with increments of 1mL up to when the pH began to rise with noticeable changes. The change was detected when 20mL of the solution was used.
- After passing the equivalent point, a 1mL increment was used to titrate up to the level when the base of 45mL was used.
- A recording of the actual pH and volume was recorded on a sheet after every addition.
An Identification using the Qualitative Technique
- 3 test tubes were filled with the unknown acid of 5mL each.
- Test tube 1 was added with thymol blue 5 drops
- Test tube 2 was added with Malachite green 5 drops
- Test tube 3 was added with crystal violet 5 drops
- The observations were put on a data sheet
- The color of the results was compared on all the test tubes that were filled with 5mL of the four acids and indicators each.
