War and Engineering
The writers of Engineering and War, Dean Nieusma and Ethan Blue have a comprehensive overview of the links between militarism and engineering. War and engineering are two terms with opposing meanings, with war implying devastation and engineering implying creation. The reason for the relation, on the other hand, is fascinating. I agree that engineering is a component of warfare (Nieusma and Ethan 50). The article's example of planning and building explosives is quite true. It is true that bombs are complex systems that necessitate a high level of experience and concentration to construct. Countries at the battle, on the other hand, use the same weapons to kill their adversaries. That example provided by the article is very conclusive, and the explanation is apparent.
Examples are the clearest way of showing similarities and differences. The article seems to matches with my personal perspective on similarities between engineering and militarism. The experienced engineers direct the younger ones through delegation of tasks and execution. The engineers at the top of the rank make crucial decisions and offer directions to the younger engineers. Similarly, the military has a grade in which the flow of orders occurs. My thinking and that of the article coincide in the comparison of how engineers operate concerning the movement of orders (Nieusma and Ethan 56). It is worth noting that young engineers at work follow the guidelines of the senior engineers just as soldiers in war receive commands from the chief officer.
In my personal understanding, the senior director is responsible for any errors that junior officers make during war. Similarly, the commander in any war is in charge of the actions of his troops. The article is very clear in pointing out that similarities between engineering and war begin during training, giving and receiving orders as well as the execution of the training. The ample research conducted by the authors goes a long way in providing a basis for the study and detailed explanations. Therefore, the study goes in line with my evolving thinking on the matter of the multiple connections between engineering and militarism. However, the article is informative and fascinating, especially the comparison between military training and engineering classes.
