Women's Artwork in the 21st Century
Recognition and Respect for Women's Works of Art
For a long time, women's works of art were not given the same amount of recognition and respect as men's. Women's work of art differs across cultures and societies, and their relationship to fine arts has been exposed to gender inequality, which means they are given less credit than men's work of art (Demaine et al. 127).
Jules Lucas: The Sand Artist
I came across Jules Lucas, a young visual artist who was playing in a small rural theater not far from my house. People referred to her as a sand artist because her painting included painting with sand. She would narrate stories with her sand paintings, which were followed by soft music in the background (Shalit 7). I actually attended her performance after hearing of her from my friend Megan who is also an art lover.
Though her performance does not attract much of a crowd, the few who are always present love to attend her shows as she narrates stories from diverse stages of life especially the tradition of the people in that area from as early as the 1960s. Sand art has in recent past gained audience especially after the work of Kseniya Simonova widely spread making her a world renowned sand artist performing for presidents and other prominent people (Kazi et al. 23). Kseniya's artwork was as a result of her desire to express her gratitude to the patriots who saved her country.
Linking the Artist's Soul and Ideas with the Audience
This work is relevant to visual art as it links the artist's soul and ideas in a vivid way to the audience (Chen and Wong 4 (a)). It also enhances the creativity of the artist thus bringing in more life to the work of art and a form of originality and immortality of the images in the minds of the viewers. Moreover, sand art appeals more to the feelings and invites dialogue and critical thinking both of the performer and the audience (Chen and Wong 6 (b)). This investigation and findings are important to class themes as it educates more on the importance of critical thinking and creative skills development.
